Cleaning after a move: what to plan for

Seau et balai de nettoyage dans un logement vide

Once the boxes have gone, one often underestimated step remains: cleaning the home you are leaving, or the one you are moving into. With proper preparation, it makes the condition inspection easier and allows you to settle into your new home with peace of mind.

When should cleaning take place?

Cleaning takes place once the home is completely empty: surfaces are accessible and there is no longer any risk of making them dirty again by moving furniture. For a home you are leaving, schedule it between the end of the move and the move-out inspection.

Which rooms require the most work?

- **The kitchen**: cupboard interiors, worktop, splashback, sink, appliances left in place, extractor hood. - **The bathroom and toilets**: sanitary fixtures, taps, seals, mirrors, tiles. - **Floors**: vacuuming followed by washing appropriate to the flooring.

Which areas are often overlooked?

- the inside of cupboards and built-in wardrobes; - skirting boards and door frames; - switches and handles; - radiators; - accessible windows and window sills; - the cellar, attic or garage, if present.

How should you organise the work?

Work from top to bottom and from the back of the home towards the exit. Prepare products suitable for each surface. If you are short of time between the move and the condition inspection, entrusting cleaning to a professional saves you an additional day's work.

What about the new home?

Cleaning before installing your furniture is also a good idea: cupboards, floors and sanitary fixtures are much easier to clean in an empty home.
