Moving a wardrobe to the fourth floor without a lift, moving a sofa that will not fit through the staircase: in some situations, a furniture lift is the simplest and safest solution.
What is a furniture lift?
A furniture lift, also called a removal lift or external goods lift, is a platform that travels along an inclined ladder positioned against the façade. Furniture and boxes are raised to a window or balcony, then received inside the home.
When is it useful?
- **No lift**: beyond a few floors, carrying all the furniture up the stairs becomes time-consuming and tiring. - **Staircase or lift too narrow**: some furniture simply will not fit. - **Bulky or heavy furniture**: wardrobes, sofas, household appliances, a piano in some cases. - **Time savings**: loading is often faster for a large volume. - **Protection of communal areas**: fewer trips through the stairwell.
What conditions are required?
A furniture lift cannot be used everywhere. It requires:
- a window or balcony wide enough for the furniture to pass through; - clear space at the base of the building to install the equipment; - a façade without major obstacles (cables, awnings, trees); - in some cases, a parking permit or a permit to occupy the public highway issued by the municipality.
The reachable height and maximum load depend on the equipment used.
How should you prepare for the work?
When requesting a quote, specify the floor, the dimensions of the window or balcony, the list of bulky furniture and the surroundings at the base of the building. Photos of the façade and opening allow feasibility to be checked quickly. On moving day, clear access to the window inside the home.
